Competitions 2026 - sixth round-up
Haywards Heath & Beech Hurst Bowls Club
Clive is through to his first competition final - and like reigning champion Mark Gooch last year, his first final is the Men's Championship.
Clive bounced back after a slow start to beat me 21-15.
He had been 4-10 down but once he got into his stride, he proved very difficult to budge.
He will play Tony Jarvis, who beat Peter Huntley 21-4 in their semi-final.
However, Clive did not quite manage to repeat the feat in the semi-final of the Handicap, losing 19-21 to Bill Mann, who battled back from 13-19 down.
Bill will have a one-shot starting advantage in the final, against Rowland, who beat Fiona 22-13.
Like Clive and me, Bill also suffered semi-final disappointment as well as delight, losing to Bob in the John Martin Shield. Bob earned his place in the final with a stunning 22-3 victory over Bill, while Mark Howell had a much more uneasy ride against Graham Aldis, scraping through 21-19 on the 25th end after Graham had led 19-15.
I’m through to a second pairs final – the Mixed Pairs, with Nicola – following our 19-11 win over Annie and Kevin McGee.
I could be playing my drawn-pairs partner in that final if Stephen and Anne Bosman manage to beat Linda and Peter Huntley.
However, if the Huntleys win, Linda will be in her second final, having beaten Paul Palmer in the semi-final of the Veterans.
She will play Basil, Clive or me.
The other finalists in the Drawn Pairs are Marge Breading and late entry Mark Gooch.
In a round full of agonisingly close finishes, spare a thought for Judy Aldis, who led John Box for most of their Sam Farmer Plate quarter-final.
In an inspired performance against a double winner in last year’s competitions, Judy was one shot away from victory at 20-18, but tenacious John hung in there and grabbed a match-winning three on the 25th end.
John has not finished with the Aldises yet. He will play Judy’s husband, Graham, in the semi-final for the right to play the winner of the semi-final between Nicola and either Tony Ashby or Stephen.
