Up to second in Mid Sussex League

Our Mid Sussex League team bounced back from their unexpected defeat last week to beat Crawley Town and move up to second in Division Three.

The eight points we took from the convincing overall win at Crawley takes us to within four points of league leaders Henfield, who have played a game more than us.

We are due to play them at home in a rearranged fixture next Thursday - and they are our opponents for the final game of the season on August 11.

We are now four points clear of Isle of Thorns, who - like us last week - were surprisingly beaten by bottom-of-the-table Horsham Park.

And we still have to play them twice, too - firstly at home next Tuesday and then away, in another rearranged fixture, on July 30.

So it's turning out to be an exciting finale to what has been a very encouraging Mid Sussex League season so far.

Division Three table after the July 14 matches:

                                             Played   Shot difference  Points
1)
Henfield                             8                   40                  52
2) Haywards Heath & BH  7                   33                  48
3) Isle of Thorns                    7                   53                  44
4) St Francis                           8                   49                 44
5) Crawley Town                    9                  -54                  33
6) Southgate Park                  7                 -17                   30
7) Horsham Park                    8                 -104                 19

So close - again

Our run in the Tom Francis competition has finally come to a halt - but once again, we fought all the way and lost our semi-final to Buxted Park with the very last shot.

Having taken Southwick Park to an extra end in the Edward Rowland Cup, it looked like a repeat in the Tom Francis.

But with Buxted Park needing two on the last end to extend the match, they took three to clinch the win with the very last bowl of the dramatic match.

While Anne's quartet, which included Bill Mann, Stephen Banks and Bob Sutton, were demolishing the very highly rated Buxted team on their own green, Mark Gooch, Clive Thomas, Nicola Coles and I were facing a battle to stay in the home leg.

We were always behind against a top-quality - but very sporting - quartet, but we picked up a series of ones to remain in contention.

By the 17th, we were ahead on aggregate, but Buxted Park kept their nerve to take the match 27-26 and clinch a place in the final.

We wish them the best of luck.
