Clive and Marge take Championship titles for the first time
Congratulations to our two brand new champions - Clive and Marge, men's and ladies' singles winners 2026.
The pair each won the top trophies for the first time in a dramatic second day of finals weekend at Beech Hurst.
Clive kept his nerve as Tony Jarvis - also in his first singles final at our club - raced into a 13-6 lead, and gradually reduced the deficit.
Then, in an enthralling finale, Clive found himself within two points of defeat before levelling, only to concede again to leave Tony one short of victory.
But he clinched the match himself with a two on the 25th end and said afterwards: "I just stuck at it."
Remarkable comeback
If that recovery was admirable, Marge's comeback from adversity against Anne was even more remarkable.
She was trailing 3-15 after only eight ends - just six short of defeat - before seizing the opportunity after winning back the mat, taking eight ends in a row and eventually triumphing 21-17.
She, too, refused to give in. "I knew Anne found long jacks difficult now, so I just kept going."
With Bill and Bob both collecting their first individual club trophies on rain-affected day one, Graham Aldis continued the trend with victory in the Sam Farmer Plate on a much more pleasant day two.
He beat Stephen 22-18 with yet another of his trademark comebacks - hauling himself back into the match when Stephen held an 18-14 lead to win the last five ends.
Linda and Peter beat Nicola and Neville in the Mixed Pairs, but Neville took some revenge in the Veterans, beating Linda 18-9, for his second trophy of the weekend after joining forces with Stephen to beat Marge and Mark Gooch in the Drawn Pairs.
The complete results will appear under Club Competitions.
Nicola, Doug and John clinch Carrow Cup
Congratulations to Nicola, Doug and John Box, who picked up the second club trophy of the season with a sweeping victory in the Carrow Cup.
Watched by former club stalwarts Anita and Mike Rymer, whose family provided the trophy, Steve Williams, Gill and Brian Goatman, they won three of their four triples matches to take the prize by seven points from Mark Howell, Fiona Burman and Mark Gooch.
It was Doug's second trophy of the season, having been in the team that came second in the David Johns Trophy in May.
For Mark Gooch, it was a second successive runners-up prize, having played alongside Doug and Bill Mann in the David Johns.
It was a first (of many, most of us would imagine) club trophy for Fiona.
Despite Nicola's team's overwhelming success, Mark's were the only team to win all four matches - albeit by a narrower margin.
Results:
Nicola Coles, Doug Cowell and John Box - 27 points
Mark Howell, Fiona Burman and Mark Gooch - 20
Graham Aldis, Jo Glenn and Graham Barton - 17
Basil Larkins, Jo Barton and Linda Huntley - 15
Neville Dalton, Judy Aldis and Doreen Penfold - 10
Anne Bosman, Cheryl Preston and Martin Gaskell - 8
Mid Sussex team cap fine season with Jimmy Riddle Trophy win
Our Mid Sussex League team triumphed in their annual match against our John Spriggs League side to retain the Jimmy Riddle Trophy.
But they were given a scare by their opponents, who play in the more junior of the two leagues.
Captain Basil Larkins led by example, skipping his four to a 22-12 victory over the Mid Sussex League's most consistent team, led by captain Anne Bosman.
The other two Mid Sussex teams won comfortably to give the senior side overall victory, but once again, Basil's players did themselves - and the club - proud.
