As usual, the biggest winner at our annual presentation tea was St Peter & St James Hospice, the charity we have taken under our fundraising wing for many years.

Captain Jill Hatfield handed over another cheque for £1,500 to hospice representative Lilly John, bringing our contributions over the past three years alone to more than £4,000.

Lilly, its relationship fundraiser, said contributions such as ours had enabled the hospice to extend daily nursing hours and open four new beds designed for patients with less predictable conditions, enabling them to spend more time with their loved-ones during their final days.

“You are making a really big difference,” she said.

Much of the money was raised during our traditional Millennium Cup charity day in August, when we, Burgess Hill and St Francis play our hearts out and then watch West Hoathly walk away with the trophy.

Another generous chunk of money comes from the entry fees of those participating in the Nicholas Soames Trophy, organised on behalf of the club by Basil.

Millennium Day is sponsored by P & S Gallagher, our generous principal sponsor, which funds most of the day’s expenses.

The company was represented at our tea by senior funeral director Paul Harber and funeral director Lucy Griffin.

Meanwhile, the trophies won during a hectic climax to our season were presented by president Jill Saunders.
