Clive Thomas’s superb season continues as he notched up three wins in two days to reach his first semi-final as well as two quarter-finals.

After big wins over Ted Prince in the Men’s Championship and Dorothy Glasby in the Veterans’ competition, he eased to a comfortable victory over me in the Handicap – what he called revenge for two defeats at my hands in other competitions earlier in the season.

Rushing to pack in a host of matches before his holiday, Clive played two in a day, beating Ted 21-3 and Dorothy 16-2 to reach the quarter-finals of both.

And in his quarter-final against me, starting with an eight-point advantage, he continued his fine form with a 21-9 win to reach the semis.

Also in the Handicap, Gwen, starting with a two-point deficit against Jill Hatfield, won through to the quarter-finals with a 21-11 victory, where she will play Dorothy or Mark Howell.

Doug Cowell is also through to the quarters after Rowland Morris forfeited their fixture. Doug faces former champion Nicola in the next round.

Injury jinx strikes again

Is Paul Palmer the unluckiest bowler in the club? He’s had two pairs partners, yet been eliminated twice without playing.

He joined Graham Brown in the Drawn Pairs, only for Graham to withdraw through injury. Then he stepped in to join Bob Sutton after his scheduled partner, Tony Jarvis had to withdraw for similar reasons, only to find his new pairing also had to withdraw following Bob's own injury.

Their scheduled opponents, Anne Bosman and Mark Howell, will face Mark Gooch and me in the quarter-finals.

Already through to the semi-finals are Dorothy Glasby and John Box, who earned an admirable 17-11 victory over Gwen Croft and Basil Larkins to join Peter Huntley and Ken Starnes, who are already through to the semi-finals.

Bob, who had beaten Jennie Evans by one point in the Veterans, hopes to be able to resume playing in time to meet his deadlines in other competitions.

Linda and Peter Huntley are through to the quarter-finals of the Mixed Pairs, winning 27-11 against Marge Breading and Tony Jarvis, who was playing his first competitive game of the season after his injury problems.

Tony has now also withdrawn from the Veterans’ competition, providing John Box with a bye to the quarter-finals, where he will meet Doug.
