Competitions 2026 - third round-up
Haywards Heath & Beech Hurst Bowls Club
It’s a family affair in the Veterans competition after Graham Aldis beat David Leach to set up a second-round tie against his wife, Judy.
The pair have never played against each other in competitive bowls but will be relishing the chance to build on their recent fine form.
Judy, who received a bye into round two, is still on a high after bowling the match-clinching wood in our dramatic Mid Sussex League match against league leaders St Francis.
And Graham, who played alongside her in that game, has also hit the ground running (well, walking… with a slight limp) after being forced to miss a couple of months with a foot injury.
He defeated David Leach 18-8 in their first-round match to set up the husband-versus-wife clash.
Ironically, Graham will not be partnering her in her Mixed Pairs quarter-final, as he had pulled out because of his injury. Rowland replaced him and the couple will face Anne and Stephen in their quarter-final.
Ironically, Rowland meets Judy in one of the Handicap quarter-finals.
Husbands and wives
On the theme of spouses, three other sets of domestic partners have also made the quarter-finals – and two of them play each other.
Mark Howell and Cheryl Preston play Linda and Peter Huntley, while Annie and Kevin McGee are currently scheduled to meet Jill Hatfield and David.
In the other tie, John Box and Wendy play Nicola and me.
Nicola and Wendy also meet in the Drawn Pairs. Nicola is partnered by Clive and Wendy by Dorothy.
Jacks strategy pays off for Bill
Bill Mann finally managed to overcome Anne Bosman’s brilliance in a fascinating battle in the Handicap competition.
Anne conceded five points handicap to the in-form Bill but wiped them off within three ends in a whirlwind start to the game.
Within minutes, she was in front and extended her lead before Bill managed to get the mat back – and transformed the game.
He delivered a series of long jacks which tested Anne on a heavyish surface, and began picking up points.
When Anne did finally get the mat back, she suffered a rare lapse and immediately surrendered it – and effectively the match.
By now, after a shaky start, Bill had returned to his metronomic form and raced to a 23-14 victory.
He meets Stephen or Bob in the quarter-finals.
Clive, who reached the Men's Championship semi-finals by beating Tony Ashby, is also through to the quarter-finals of the Handicap, where he will play John Box, who defeated Jennie. He will have an eight-shot start over John.
One of the semi-finalists will have a full 12 points – Fiona plays Kevin, both ranked at 12, for a place in the last four.
Sam Farmer draw
The draw for the first rounds of the Sam Farmer Plate has now been made.
The competition is for all players who were knocked out in their first games in the Men’s and Ladies’ Championships and in the Handicap.
