Linda Huntley will play former champion Dorothy Glasby in the final of the Ladies’ Championship after a competition of precious few games and a couple of walkovers.

Following reigning champion Elsie Wilding’s decision not to defend her title, only seven people entered the club’s sole female-only internal competition.

And with Jill Hatfield given a first-round bye and Dorothy Glasby a walkover, matches have been few and far between.

Fortunately, those that have been played have thrown up some fascinating duels and results – not least Dorothy’s narrow semi-final victory over Marge Breading in a match that went to 29 ends.

Dorothy – a former winner of the competition - finally emerged victorious from nearly three hours of battle, pipping Marge 21-18.

Marking the match was Linda, who had already sealed her place in the final with a 21-7 success against Jill Hatfield.

Linda actually had to win two matches to reach the final, having defeated former champion and last year’s runner-up, Nicola Coles, in the first round.

Marge is the only other player to have played twice.

Bob and Basil make their Mark in Men’s

Three of the men’s Championship semi-finalists are known.

Bob Sutton, who beat Tony Ashby 22-13, will face Basil Larkins, who defeated Peter Huntley in a dramatic finish to their quarter-final.

Mark Gooch is also through, having beaten Graham Brown 21-11. He will play either reigning champion Andrew Croft or Clive Thomas for a place in the final.

Two of the semi-finalists in the Handicap competition are also known.

Nicola had to dig deep to defeat Doug Cowell – who had a 10-point start. And Clive had slightly less trouble knocking out yours truly, extending his eight-point starting advantage to 12 by the end.

Nicola will face the winner of Andrew Croft’s game against John Box (who has a 10-point start), while Clive plays either Gwen Croft or Mark Howell (one point).

Mark and I – who have already played each other in the drawn pairs – will face each other again in two singles competitions. We meet in the first round proper of the Sam Farmer Trophy and also in the semi-finals of the John Martin Shield.

Mark Gooch is also a semi-finalist in the John Martin – his second so far - where he will face Marge.

Jennie pipped in Veterans’ contest

The Veterans’ two-wood competition has already thrown up some contrasting scorelines.

Clive defeated Dorothy in the first round 16-2 and Anne Bosman beat Graham Aldis 18-1, while Linda beat Ken Starnes 13-10 and Judy Aldis beat Maurice Benson 14-11 – and Bob beat Jennie Evans 13-12 in the closest finish yet.

There are some heavyweight fixtures coming up in the Drawn Pairs semi-finals.

Dorothy and John Box face Mark Howell and Anne Bosman, while Ken and Peter play the winners of the quarter-final between Bill Mann and Andrew and Maurice and Nicola.

The Mixed Pairs are still at the early stages, with Jennie and Graham Brown the only semi-finalists so far.

Anne and Stephen Banks have withdrawn from the competition due to an injury sustained by Stephen, allowing Graham Brown and Jennie Evans to progress to the semi-finals.

The draw for the Sam Farmer Trophy was made earlier this month.

For a competition restricted to those knocked out at the first attempt in the men’s and ladies’ championships and the Handicap, there are some formidable figures involved.

Former men’s champions Basil and Tony Ashby play each other while Anne and Nicola – both former women’s champions – face Maurice and Stephen respectively.

And Marge, whose trophy haul last season included this competition, is in it again – facing Rowland Morris in the first round.
