The Men’s Championship final will feature two players at opposite ends of the experience spectrum – twice-champion Basil Larkins will play Mark Gooch, who has reached the final in his first competitive season.

Basil had been waiting for several weeks to discover his opponent, having beaten Bob Sutton back in July.

Now, after a semi-final worthy of the competition, Mark has made it through, defeating Clive Thomas – also in his first year of competitions at our club – following an impressive fightback.

Mark was trailing 4-12 after 11 ends, with Clive bowling superbly and consistently. But by the 15th Mark was ahead, and despite a late mini-surge from Clive, Mark held on to triumph 22-16.

Mark will also feature in a second final – the John Martin Shield, where he will face yours truly following my victory over an off-key Mark Howell - the third time I have reached the final of this competition.

I have two other semi-finals – the Mixed Pairs, with Nicola Coles, and the Sam Farmer Trophy, where I will play against her.

We face Linda and Peter Huntley in the mixed pairs. The other semi-final is between Gwen and Andrew Croft and Jennie Evans and Graham Brown.

Familiar faces in the Sam Farmer

Intriguingly, the Sam Farmer semi-finals pitch two sets of mixed-pairs partners against each other – Tony Ashby plays Anne Bosman, with whom he has won the mixed pairs twice, and I face Nicola, with whom I once reached the final!

Andrew is already through to one final – the Drawn Pairs, with partner Bill Mann, after their 17-16 victory over Ken Starnes and Peter Huntley, despite Andrew’s broken foot.

They will play Anne Bosman and Mark Howell, who defeated Dorothy Glasby and John Box.

Anne is still in the running for three final appearances – already in the Sam Farmer semi-final, she faces Linda in the same stage of the Veterans competition after pipping Basil 12-11.

Linda, who is in the Ladies' Championship final, could match her, having beaten Gwen 14-8 to reach her third semi-final of the season.

John Box is also there after he pipped me in a close-fought quarter-final on the extra end after we finished level after the regulation 18.

He will face the winner of the match between Clive and Bob.
